- The Pitch:
- Journey's softbrew is a steeping of whole, botanical herbs, roots,
and spices by a unique time and temperature method. This uniquely steeped
"botanical tea" is then folded into a fine balance of natural
sweeteners and cold, purified sparkling water. Every drop is worth the
Journey.
-
- The Ingredients:
- Sparkling purified water, natural sweetener blend (unrefined cane
sugar, fructose, tree-tapped Alaskan birch syrup), herb and spice brew
(water, birch bark, roasted chicory, juniper berries, other herbs and
spices), phosphoric acid, natural flavors..

Spike says:
- I fear this drink. After my first
experience with Journey products I had little hope this would be
any good. It's actually not bad, for a sissy drink Take a look at the
pitch above. Does that sound like a manly drink? Just reading it makes
me want to put cucumber slices on my eyes. I don't think I've written
the word "steeping" even once in my life and there it is,
twice. "Botanical tea"? How '90's of them. It's a new millennium,
baby. Time for something raw. Steak root beer. Yeah, that's more like
it. Steeped cow flesh...mmmm. Anyway, back to the review: Nice and dark,
like coffee, no head. Fairly carbonated. This drink has definite cane
sugar taste with a hint of something acidic, like lemon. Maybe it's
the phosphoric acid. Who thought to put that into a root beer (and other
sodas)? "Hey Bob, this drink isn't bad but why not spice it up
with some acid?" Phosphoric acid was the "Chemical
of the Week" at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and from
that I learned that it is mostly "used in the production of fertilizers."
Also used in detergent and to clean and rust proof steel. Yummy. Ah
yes..."In foods, phosphoric acid provides a tart, acidic flavor."
Still, it doesn't explain who came up with, "rust proofer, water
softener, fertilizer...let's drink it!" I'm surprised it's in this
drink. The herb and spice brew sounds like someone's yard waste, then
they throw in some battery acid to top it off. Great... So despite all
the fanciness on the label, this stuff is pretty decent. I wouldn't
drink it every day but I recommend it for a change maybe once a year.
Fortunately the taste of juniper doesn't come through. It's on the line
but for providing a taste that's a little different I'll give them the
benefit of the doubt again and give it a B-
(yes, I know that phosphoric acid is not battery acid, please don't
write)
